Le mot prophète au féminin prophétesse (grec : προφήτης [profétès], interprète des paroles d'un dieu ou d'un oracle ; devin), désigne une personne considérée comme l'envoyé, le messager d'une divinité, venue pour prévenir, mettre en garde ou révéler la « vérité » à un groupe humain ou à tous les humains. Un faux-prophète est simplement un prophète qui n'est pas reconnu par la religion du locuteur.

Ein Prophet bezeichnet eine Person, die im Sinne seines Glaubens eine Botschaft oder Prophezeiung von einem Gott oder Gottheit durch Vision, Audition oder Traum empfängt und den Auftrag erfüllt, diese Botschaft anderen zu überbringen. Das meist (aber nicht immer) vorhandene Selbstverständnis als Prophet beruht auf einem persönlichen Gottesverhältnis. Das Wort stammt aus der altgriechischen Bibelübersetzung Septuaginta, die um 250 v. Chr. erfolgte. Das hebräische Substantiv נבי (nābī) wird meist mit προφητης (prophētēs), wörtlich „Sprecher/in (einer Gottheit)“, übersetzt.

W religiach abrahamowych prorokiem jest osoba będąca w kontakcie z Bogiem, będąca jego "ustami" na ziemi, nierzadko założyciel jakiejś religii. W każdej jednak jego rola i znaczenie są nieco inne, np. u mormonów prorokiem nazywany jest każdy kolejny prezydent Kościoła, począwszy od Josepha Smitha.

Il termine profeta deriva dal greco προφητής [profetès], e letteralmente vuol dire "colui che parla davanti", sia nel senso di parlare pubblicamente (davanti ad ascoltatori), sia nel senso di parlare anticipatamente (di qualcosa che deve ancora accadere).Nel linguaggio corrente il profeta si confonde spesso con il chiaroveggente o l'indovino, e comunque con chiunque fornisca informazioni su qualcosa che non è ancora successo, ma in senso proprio il profeta è una figura tipicamente religiosa, più o meno istituzionalizzata in diverse fedi, all'interno delle quali parla a nome della Divinità.
