Pronunciation refers to the ability to use the correct stress, rhythm and intonation of a word in a spoken language. A word can be spoken in different ways by various individuals or groups, depending on many factors, such as: the area in which they grew up, the area in which they now live, if they have a speech or voice disorder, their ethnic group, their social class, or their education.

Aussprache (auch: Lautung, englisch: pronunciation) nennt man die tatsächliche Lautgebung von Wörtern der gesprochenen Sprache im Unterschied zum Schriftbild. Sie ist Gegenstand der Phonetik. Die Schriftsysteme der verschiedenen Sprachen sind unterschiedlich stark an der Aussprache orientiert, so etwa (Finnisch stärker als Deutsch, Deutsch stärker als Englisch). Keine der geschichtlich gewachsenen Orthographien ist jedoch konsequent phonetisch. Zum Erlernen einer Fremdsprache kann darum das Internationale Phonetische Alphabet hilfreich sein.

La prononciation que l'on a d'un mot est la façon de le dire. La prononciation ne change pas le sens du mot, mais provient du contexte dans lequel on l'a appris : l'époque, l'endroit où l'on est né ou bien où l'on vit, mais aussi la classe sociale et l'éducation. Le terme accent, lui, désigne une prononciation généralement plus subtile.

Uttal av ett ord är det sätt som antingen en enskild individ säger ordet, eller det sätt som de flesta talare av språket säger ordet.
