Progressive metal (sometimes known as prog metal or prog-metal) is a subgenre of heavy metal originating in the United Kingdom and North America in the late 1980s. Progressive metal blended elements of heavy metal and progressive rock music, taking the loud "aggression", amplified electric guitar-driven sound of the former, with the more experimental, complex and "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter. Progressive metal often kept the conceptual themes associated with progressive rock. Throughout the years, progressive metal has borrowed influences from several other genres, including classical and jazz fusion music.

Progressive Metal ist eine stilistische Synthese aus den Musikrichtungen Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock und Psychedelic Rock, die seit den 1990er Jahren zu großer Popularität gelangte. Bereits Anfang der 1980er Jahre kam es allerdings zu ersten Berührungen zwischen den beiden Genres Progressive Rock und Metal.

Metal progresywny – podgatunek heavy metalu, który posiada wiele cech rocka progresywnego, w tym złożone struktury kompozycyjne, niestandardowe i zmienne metrum, zawiłe partie instrumentalne. Wysoki poziom artystyczny kompozycji często łączony jest z obszernymi tekstami w formie opowieści epickich, co w rezultacie daje długie utwory (nawet 15-20 minut) i albumy koncepcyjne. Piosenki z tego gatunku rzadko pojawiają się w popularnych programach radiowych i telewizyjnych, głównie ze względu na swoją długość.
