Professor
The meaning of the word professor (Latin: person who professes to be an expert in some art or science, teacher of highest rank) varies. In most English-speaking countries, it refers to a senior academic who holds a departmental chair, especially as head of the department, or a personal chair awarded specifically to that individual. In some countries like in the United StatesHong KongCanada and India, individuals often use the term professor as a polite form of address for any lecturer, or researcher employed by a college or university, regardless of rank. In some countries, e.g. AustriaFranceRomaniaSerbia and Italy, the term also applies to high school teachers. (See differences and main positions below for more information.)

Professeur
Un professeur, ou enseignant, est une personne érudite chargée de transmettre des connaissances ou des méthodes de raisonnement à autrui dans une matière, domaine ou discipline scolaire, ou bien dans le cadre d'une formation plus générale, à un ou plusieurs élèves ou étudiants, le plus souvent dans le cadre d'une institution (école, université...), voire de cours particuliers. Dans ce dernier cas, on parle aussi de précepteur, lorsque l'organisation de l'ensemble de la scolarité d'un élève est prise en charge par un enseignant employé à titre privé.

Professur
Professur (von lat. profiteri in der Bedeutung „sich öffentlich als Lehrer zu erkennen geben“) bezeichnet im deutschen Sprachraum primär eine Funktion im Lehrkörper einer Hochschule. Professor (weiblich Professorin) ist Berufsbezeichnung des Inhabers einer Professur, in Österreich ist Professor auch Berufs- oder Ehrentitel. Die Hauptaufgabe von Professoren ist die eigenverantwortliche Durchführung universitärer Forschung und Lehre (im Sinne des humboldtschen Bildungsideals). Professur und Lehrstuhl sind nicht unbedingt miteinander verbunden.

Professore è il titolo che in Italia spetta a chi insegna in una università o in una scuola secondaria. (In lingua inglese il titolo professor è invece riservato ai professori universitari; il termine profesor in spagnolo è usato non solo per gli insegnanti della scuola secondaria, ma anche per quelli della scuola primaria; anche in francese il termine è usato sia per le scuole secondarie che per le scuole primarie, nella forma Professeur des écoles; in tedesco il termine Professor ha un significato analogo a quello inglese in Germania, mentre in Austria l'uso è analogo a quello italiano. Le lingue non europee non permettono ovviamente confronti.)
