A priest or priestess is a person having the authority or power to perform and administer religious rites; and in particular, rites of sacrifice to, and propitiation of the deity or deities. Their office or position is the priesthood, a term which may also apply to such persons collectively.Priestesses and priests have been known since the earliest of times and in the simplest societies (see oracle and shaman). They exist in some branches of Christianity, Shintoism, Hinduism, and many other religions, as well, and are generally regarded as having good contact with the deities of the religion to which he or she ascribes, often interpreting the meaning of events, performing the rituals of the religion, and to whom other believers often will turn for advice on spiritual matters.

Der Priester (lat.: ) existiert in einem Großteil der religiösen Gemeinschaften als eine aus der Allgemeinheit herausgehobene Amtsperson, die sich durch eine besondere religiöse oder göttliche Kraft auszeichnet und in seiner Eigenschaft als Kultvorsteher eine Mittlerrolle zwischen der Gottheit und den Menschen einnimmt. Das deutsche Wort Priester stammt vom griechischen πρεσβύτερος, presbyteros - „Ältester“. Davon abgeleitet sind auch die entsprechenden Wörter vieler europäischer Sprachen. Religionsphänomenologisch und soziologisch steht der Priesterbegriff jedoch im Bedeutungsfeld von griech. ἱερος, hieros - „heilig, geweiht“ und lat. sacerdos - „Priester“.

Kapłan - osoba, która spełnia w imieniu wspólnoty funkcje kultowe i rytualne. Funkcje te nadają jej rolę przynajmniej częściowego pośrednika między Bogiem a ludźmi. Na ogół posiada pewne religijne przywileje, w zamian za co musi poddawać się określonym wymogom religijnej czystości. Kapłanom powierza się często również funkcje duchowej opieki oraz władzy religijnej nad członkami wspólnot. Kapłanem zostaje się jako wybrany przez wspólnotę lub też przez innych kapłanów. Dostęp do kapłaństwa może być ograniczony względami fizycznymi, płcią, dyspozycjami psychicznymi bądź też zdolnościami wrodzonymi i nabytymi. Właściwe stawanie się kapłanem (święcenia kapłańskie) stanowi chwilę o wysokim znaczeniu rytualnym, poprzedzoną okresem nauk i prób.
