A pregnancy test attempts to determine whether a woman is pregnant. Markers that indicate pregnancy are found in urine and blood, and pregnancy tests require sampling one of these substances. The first of these markers to be discovered, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), was discovered in 1930 to be produced by the trophoblast cells of the fertilised ovum (blastocyst). While hCG is a reliable marker of pregnancy, it cannot be detected until after implantation: this results in false negatives if the test is performed during the very early stages of pregnancy.  Obstetric ultrasonography may also be used to detect pregnancy. Obstetric ultrasonography was first practiced in the 1960s; the first home test kit for hCG was released in the mid-1970s.

Der immunologische Schwangerschaftstest dient dem Nachweis einer Schwangerschaft. Um sich bei Schwangerschaftszeichen zu vergewissern, dass auch tatsächlich eine Schwangerschaft vorliegt, wird oft das Vorhandensein des schwangerschaftserhaltenden Hormons  hCG im Körper geprüft. Dieses Hormon kommt im Trophoblastengewebe vor, das vom Fetus oder der Plazenta gebildet wird, weshalb es nur während der Schwangerschaft nachgewiesen werden kann.

Med hjälp av ett graviditetstest kan en graviditet fastställas eller uteslutas. Tester för hemmabruk finns tillgängliga att köpa i butiker och på apotek och är relativt enkla att utföra på egen hand. En provsticka doppas då i urin och visar därefter på bara någon minut ett svar med över 90 procents tillförlitlighet, förutsatt att testet utförs på rätt sätt. Graviditetstestet reagerar på ett hormon som heter humant koriongonadotropin (hCG) som endast förekommer hos gravida kvinnor eftersom det utsöndras från moderkakan. Idag finns tester som man kan ta upp till tre dagar innan förväntad mens och ändå få ett säkert resultat.

Test ciążowy - test pozwalający wykryć produkowaną przez trofoblast gonadotropinę kosmówkową (hCG), której pojawienie się świadczy o zagnieżdżeniu się jaja płodowego w błonie śluzowej macicy. Do zagnieżdżenia dochodzi w 7 dniu od zapłodnienia i do tego momentu poziom hCG wzrasta aż do 2 - 3 miesiąca ciąży po czym zaczyna spadać, aż do momentu porodu.
