Power metal is a style of heavy metal music typically with the aim of evoking an "epic" feel, combining characteristics of traditional metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (Especially Germany, Italy and Scandinavia) with a lighter, more melodic sound and making frequent use of keyboards. With mainstream metal's fall from popularity and the growth of the underground metal scene, power metal can be seen as a parallel counterpart to extreme metal within the metalhead subculture. It is one of the most popular genres amongst metalheads yet has achieved low mainstream success in the United States compared to thrash metal.

Le power metal est un terme qui a été employé de façons diverses et variées au cours de l'histoire du metal pour désigner différentes tendances stylistiques, parfois sans rapports directs entre elles . Cependant depuis la fin des années 90 l'emploi du terme power metal semble s'être cristallisé pour désigner principalement un des sous-genres du speed metal,à savoir le speed metal mélodique. C'est cette acception européenne du terme qui est la plus fréquemment utilisée, notamment dans la presse spécialisée. En ce sens, le power metal est donc un terme utilisé pour désigner les groupes de speed metal qui, tout en gardant la grande vitesse de ce style, favorisent en plus un aspect mélodique et accrocheur, ainsi qu'une atmosphère épique. Les prémisses de ce style musical ont été introduits par les groupes Helloween, Gamma Ray et Blind Guardian à la fin des années 80, mais ce n'est qu'au milieu des années 90 qu'il est devenu un genre à part entière.

Als Power Metal werden mehrere Untergenres des Metal bezeichnet, wobei man zwischen „europäischem“ und „US-amerikanischem“ Power Metal unterscheidet. Il Power metal è un sottogenere dell'heavy metal che prende spunto da una buona parte dell'heavy metal classico (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Scorpions, Accept e Manowar) e da parte del primo speed ottantiano, venendo influenzato particolarmente da gruppi come Accept, Grave Digger e i primi Savatage. Per quanto riguarda l'apporto dato dall'hard & heavy settantiano, per maestosità dei suoni e tematiche vengono generalmente considerati come maggiore influenza i Rainbow.
