Der Begriff Post dient als Sammelbegriff für drei unterschiedliche Bereiche des Postwesens:Unternehmen, die
Briefe befördern und zustellen (
Postdienstleister), werden als Post bezeichnet, speziell in Deutschland die
Deutsche Post AG.Die öffentlichen Geschäftsräume der Postdienstleister (Postamt, Postagentur, Postladen) werden als Post bezeichnet.Die Briefe,
Zeitungen und Päckchen, die durch Postunternehmen befördert und zugestellt werden (Postsendungen oder auch Postgut), fallen ebenfalls unter den Sammelbegriff. Traditionelle Gasthäuser werden häufig „Post“ oder mit Zusätzen wie „Zur Post“, „Poststube“ etc. genannt, weil zur Zeit der Postkutschen die logistischen Stützpunkte der „Post“ häufig in Gasthäusern untergebracht waren. Zeitungen wurden zum Teil ebenfalls als „Post“ oder mit entsprechenden Zusätzen wie Leipziger Post bezeichnet.
