Porphyritic is an adjective used in geology, specifically for igneous rocks, for a rock that has a distinct difference in the size of the crystals, with at least one group of crystals obviously larger than another group. Porphyritic rocks may be aphanites or extrusive, with large crystals or phenocrysts floating in a fine-grained groundmass of non-visible crystals, as in a porphyritic basalt, or phanerites or intrusive, with individual crystals of the groundmass may be easily distinguished with the eye, but one group of crystals clearly much bigger than the rest, as in a porphyritic granite. Most types of igneous rocks may display some degree of porphyritic texture. One main type of rock that has a porphyritic texture are porphyry, though not all porphyritic rocks are porphyries.

Porphyr (altgr. ,purpurfarben’) ist ein Sammelbegriff für verschiedene vulkanische Gesteine, die große, gut ausgebildete Kristalle in einer feinkörnigen Grundmasse besitzen. Sie haben für gewöhnlich eine saure (quarzreiche) bis intermediäre Zusammensetzung und bestehen meist aus Feldspäten.

Le porphyre est une roche magmatique filonienne, qui présente des grands cristaux de feldspath noyés dans une pâte aphanitique, faisant partie du groupe des andésites se présente essentiellement sous deux grandes formes:

• le porphyre rouge antique

qui est une andésite à faciès paléovolcanique dont les feldspaths et la pâte sont colorés par de l'épidote rose (piémontite).

• le porphyre vert antique

qui est une andésite à faciès paléovolcanique à pâte vert foncé, et à de nombreux grands cristaux de labradorite pseudomorphosés par de l'épidote vert pistache.

Porfyr, helt eller övervägande kristallin, oftast massformig, mer eller mindre sur silikatbergart av växlande färg, oftast svart till grå men förekommer också som röd, rödbrun eller brunviolett. Porfyr har bildats dels genom stelning av lava på eller nära under jordytan, dels genom avlagring av och "förstening" av vulkanisk aska. Karakteristiskt för bergarten är i den finkorniga eller täta grundmassan utströdda kristaller av i första hand kvarts och fältspat. Även andra mineral förekommer som till exempel svart glimmer (biotit). Dessa strökorn har kristalliserat långt under jordytan, i ett tidigt skede av det vulkaniska materialets vandring uppåt, och har därför blivit mycket större än partiklarna i den hastigt stelnade lava eller det askregn som de blivit inbäddade i.
