Sponges are animals of the phylum Porifera (; meaning "pore bearer").They are multicellular organisms which have bodies full of pores and channels allowing water to circulate through them, consisting of jelly-like mesohyl sandwiched between two thin layers of cells. Sponges have unspecialized cells that can transform into other types and which often migrate between the main cell layers and the mesohyl in the process. Sponges do not have nervous, digestive or circulatory systems. Instead, most rely on maintaining a constant water flow through their bodies to obtain food, oxygen and remove wastes.

Die Schwämme (Porifera, Spongiaria) bilden einen Tierstamm innerhalb der Abteilung der Gewebelosen (Parazoa). Sie leben allesamt im Wasser und kommen in allen Meeresgewässern der Erde vor. Nur wenige Arten leben im Süßwasser.

Les éponges constituent l’embranchement (vraisemblablement paraphylétique) des Spongiaires et sont des animaux sans organes ou appareils bien définis. Leur corps n’est formé que par deux couches de cellules (ectoderme et endoderme). Leurs cellules, animales, sont hétérotrophes, c’est-à-dire qu'elles doivent se procurer de la matière organique à partir d'autres organismes.

Svampdjur, eller spongier, Porifera, är cirka 10 000 arter som till utseendet liknar svampar, men de är inte släkt med svamparna. Namnet svampdjur är vilseledande eftersom svampar bildar ett eget rike (Fungi), medan svampdjur tillhör djurriket och har ett inre skelett. Svampdjuren utvecklades för nästan 650 miljoner år sedan.

Gąbki (Porifera) – typ prymitywnych,  beztkankowych zwierząt wodnych, najczęściej morskich. Te zwierzęta budują olbrzymie kolonie liczące nawet 50 000 osobników. Żywią się drobinkami pokarmowymi. Dorosłe osobniki nie potrafią się poruszać. Są jednymi z najprostszych zwierząt, nie posiadają nerwów ani żadnych organów. Ich budowa, a zwłaszcza obecność komórek kołnierzykowych (choanocytów) sugeruje, że są one bardzo blisko spokrewnione z wiciowcami kołnierzykowymi. Wniosek ten potwierdziły badania genetyczne. Odkryte zostało ok. 10 000 gatunków gąbek, ale niektórzy naukowcy uważają, że może być ich jeszcze trzy razy więcej. Te zwierzęta żyją nawet na głębokości 9 000 metrów. Pierwsze niepewne skamieniałości gąbek pochodzą już z końcowego neoproterozoiku (600 mln lat temu), a niewątpliwe gąbki znane są z początku kambru.
