population (statistics)

In statistics, a statistical population is a set of entities concerning which statistical inferences are to be drawn, often based on a random sample taken from the population. For example, if we were interested in generalizations about crows, then we would describe the set of crows that is of interest. Notice that if we choose a population like all crows, we will be limited to observing crows that exist now or will exist in the future. Probably, geography will also constitute a limitation in that our resources for studying crows are also limited.

Population statistics is the use of statistics to analyze characteristics or changes to a population. It is related to social demography and demography.Population statistics can analyze anything from global demographic changes to local small scale changes. In der empirischen Forschung bezeichnet die Grundgesamtheit (auch Population) die Menge aller potentiellen Untersuchungsobjekte für eine bestimmte Fragestellung. Aus pragmatischen Erwägungen wird normalerweise nicht die Grundgesamtheit, sondern eine Stichprobe untersucht, die für die Grundgesamtheit repräsentativ ist.

Populacja statystyczna (inaczej populacja generalna, zbiorowość generalna) to zbiór elementów, podlegających badaniu statystycznemu. Elementy populacji są do siebie podobne pod względem badanej cechy, ale nie są identyczne. Przykład: Wszyscy ludzie w Polsce posiadają cechę wzrostu - są pod tym względem podobni, ale nie identyczni: są ludzie wysocy i niscy. Populacją w badaniu statystycznym wzrostu ludzi w Polsce będą wszyscy ludzie w Polsce.Nie wszystkie populacje muszą istnieć w rzeczywistości, niektóre z nich mają charakter wyłącznie hipotetyczny.

In de statistiek is een populatie een ten aanzien van bepaalde aspecten homogene verzameling van objecten waarop het onderzoek zich richt. Doel van het onderzoek is steeds inzicht te krijgen in de frequentieverdeling van eigenschappen van de populatie. Zo'n populatieverdeling wordt beschreven door parameters, zoals het populatiegemiddelde, de populatiestandaardafwijking, de populatiefractie, enz.

母集団（ぼしゅうだん）とは、統計学的推定で基本として仮定する、ある要素の集合であって、これからランダムな標本を抽出して観察し、その結果から逆に母集団を推定するという形で用いる。例えば、カラスを対象としてその性質を調べたい時、具体的な必要性に応じて「全てのカラス」、「ある地域に生息するカラス」、「カラス成鳥」といった集合が母集団になる。このように野生動物全てを調べるのは不可能だから、その一部を標本として調べ、母集団に外挿する事が必要である。人間を対象にする場合には、ある集団に属する人を母集団としてその全員について調査する（全員を標本とする）事も理論上可能だが、例えば、日本の選挙権を持つ国民全員を対象にして世論調査をする事など事実上不可能（選挙と同じ事になる）だから、この場合も標本から母集団を推定するという方法が必要になるという訳である。又、「ある薬品で治療を受けた患者」を母集団とした場合なども将来の全ての患者を含む必要になるため、やはり同じ方法が不可欠である。
