A syllable (Ancient Greek: ) is a unit of organization for a sequence of speech sounds. It is typically made up of a syllable nucleus (most often a vowel) with optional initial and final margins (typically, consonants).Syllables are often considered the phonological "building blocks" of words. They can influence the rhythm of a language, its  prosody, its poetic meter, its stress patterns, etc.A word that consists of a single syllable (like English cat) is called a monosyllable (such a word is monosyllabic), while a word consisting of two syllables (like monkey) is called a disyllable (such a word is disyllabic). A word consisting of three syllables (such as indigent) is called a trisyllable (the adjective form is trisyllabic). A word consisting of more than three syllables (such as intelligence) is called a polysyllable (and could be described as polysyllabic), although this term is often used to describe words of two syllables or more.

La notion de syllabe est difficile à cerner, pour une bonne raison : elle varie selon la langue à analyser. Plusieurs approches sont possibles pour tenter de la définir. On peut, pour l'instant, se contenter de dire qu'un locuteur lambda est capable de découper un mot en syllabes dans sa langue, sans forcément savoir comment il procède. Une syllabe est composée d’un ou plusieurs phonèmes et un mot est formé d’une ou plusieurs syllabes.

Die Silbe (v. lat.: syllaba, griech.: συλλαβή „Zusammenfassung“. Hier: Zsf. von Lauten oder Phonemen) ist ein grammatischer beziehungsweise linguistischer Begriff, der eine Einheit aus einem oder mehreren aufeinander folgenden Lauten (Phonemen) bezeichnet, die sich in einem Zug aussprechen lassen (Sprecheinheit). Sie stellt die kleinste Lautgruppe im natürlichen Sprechfluss dar. Sie ist eine phonetische und keine Sinneinheit. Das bedeutet, dass die Einteilung in Silben oft nicht mit der Einteilung in bedeutungstragende Einheiten (Morpheme) übereinstimmt.

Sylaba (zgłoska) – element struktury fonologicznej, większy niż segment (głoska), mniejszy niż wyraz. Sylaba musi zawierać co najmniej jeden ośrodek (nucleus), którym jest zazwyczaj samogłoska (w niektórych językach może to być też spółgłoska sylabiczna). Jeśli ośrodek poprzedzony jest spółgłoskami, nazywamy je nagłosem (onset), jeśli z kolei następują po nim jakieś spółgłoski, tworzą one wygłos (koda).

La sillaba è un complesso di suoni che si pronunciano unite con una sola emissione di voce. L'unità prosodica della sillaba è presente nelle realizzazioni foniche di ogni lingua, e il fatto che la metrica si basi spesso sulla scansione sillabica, o il fatto che i parlanti sappiano sillabare con naturalezza nelle proprie lingue, dimostra che la sillaba è un elemento naturale del linguaggio di cui ogni parlante ha coscienza.
