Pollination is an important step in the reproduction of seed plants: the transfer of pollen grains (male gametes) to the plant carpel, the structure that contains the ovule (female gamete). The receptive part of the carpel is called a stigma in the flowers of angiosperms and a micropyle in gymnosperms. The study of pollination brings together many disciplines, such as botany, horticulture, entomology, and ecology. Pollination is important in horticulture because most plant fruits will not develop if the ovules are not fertilized. The pollination process as interaction between flower and vector was first addressed in the 18th century by Christian Konrad Sprengel.

La pollinisation est le mode de reproduction privilégié des plantes angiospermes et gymnospermes. Il s'agit du processus de transport d'un grain de pollen depuis l'étamine (organe mâle) afin que celui-ci rencontre les organes femelles de la même espèce, rendant possible la fécondation.

Bestäubung (Blütenbestäubung) ist die Übertragung des Pollens (des Blütenstaubs, der Pollenkörner) auf die empfänglichen Teile einer Blüte. Bei den Samenpflanzen (Bedecktsamern) wird bei der Bestäubung Pollen auf die Narbe des Fruchtblatts abgelagert. Das Pollenkorn entspricht einem männlichen Gametophyten, der weibliche Gametophyt befindet sich im Fruchtblatt der Blüte und wird dort von Integument und Nucellus eingehüllt.

Bestuiving is een belangrijke stap in de voortplanting van zaadplanten: de overdracht van stuifmeelkorrels (mannelijke geslachtscellen) uit de helmhokjes van de meeldraad naar de stempel van de stamper. De stempel en stijl zit bovenop het vruchtbeginsel dat één of meer eicellen (vrouwelijke geslachtscel) bevat. De studie van bestuiving vindt plaats in vele disciplines, zoals plantkunde, tuinbouw, entomologie en ecologie. Bestuiving is belangrijk in de tuinbouw omdat de meeste plantvruchten zich niet zullen ontwikkelen als de eicellen niet worden bevrucht.
