Pollen is a fine to coarse powder containing the microgametophytes of  seed plants, which produce the male gametes (sperm cells). Pollen grains have a hard coat that protects the sperm cells during the process of their movement from the stamens to the pistil of flowering plants or from the male cone to the female cone of coniferous plants. When pollen lands on a compatible pistil or female cone (i.e., when pollination has occurred), it germinates and produces a pollen tube that transfers the sperm to the ovule (or female gametophyte). Individual pollen grains are small enough to require magnification to see detail.

Der Pollen oder Blütenstaub ist die meist mehlartige Masse, die in den Antheren der Samenpflanzen gebildet wird. Er besteht aus den Pollenkörnern, den Mikrosporen. Sprachlich ist Pollen ein Sammelname; eine einzelne Mikrospore ist nicht ein Pollen, sondern ein Pollenkorn. Das Pollenkorn ist das Ergebnis einer Reduktionsteilung (Meiose) und besitzt somit nur einen einfachen Chromosomensatz, ist also haploid. Es entspricht damit den Sporen der Moose und Farne. Die Pollenkörner sind von einer widerstandsfähigen Zellwand umgeben, die unter anderem aus Sporopollenin besteht. Zum Zeitpunkt der Freisetzung haben sich die Pollenkörner bereits zu den männlichen Gametophyten entwickelt. Pollenkörner dienen dazu, die männlichen Sporen beziehungsweise Gametophyten geschützt zu den weiblichen Empfangsorganen zu bringen und so die Bestäubung und in weiterer Folge die Befruchtung zu gewährleisten

Le pollen (du grec palè : farine ou poussière) constitue, chez les végétaux supérieurs, l'élément fécondant mâle de la fleur : ce sont de minuscules grains de forme plus ou moins ovoïde de quelques dizaines de micromètres de diamètre, initialement contenus dans l'anthère à l'extrémité des étamines.

Pollen (frömjöl) är växters medel för förökning. För att förökning ska kunna ske måste pollenkornen, som är fröväxternas hanliga fortplantnings- eller förökningskroppar, ta sig från en växt till en annan, så kallad korspollinering. Alternativt kan pollinering också ske inom samma växt, så kallad självpollinering. Korspollinering kan ske med hjälp av insekter, genom att pollen sprids med vinden eller vibrationer. Pollen är en livsnödvändig kost för insektsgruppen bin (Apoidae). De erhåller ett överskott av pollen genom sin livsföring. Läran om pollen kallas palynologi.

Pyłek kwiatowy, ziarna pyłku - męskie elementy rozrodcze występujące u roślin nasiennych wytwarzane w komorach pyłkowych pylników z tkanki archesporialnej. Pylniki są elementami pręcików. Nowo powstałe ziarno pyłku stanowi mikrosporę, a dojrzałe ziarno pyłku - gametofit męski. Służy ono do zapylania słupków kwiatowych.
