Politics is the process by which groups of people make decisions. Although the term is generally applied to behavior within civil governments, politics is observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions.Politics consists of "social relations involving authority or power" and refers to the regulation of a political unit, and to the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply policy.Political science (also political studies) is the study of political behavior and examines the acquisition and application of power. Related areas of study include political philosophy, which seeks a rationale for politics and an ethic of public behavior, and public administration, which examines the practices of governance.

Le mot politique vient du grec politikè (« science des affaires de la Cité »). Étymologiquement, la politique est donc synonyme d'organisation du pouvoir dans la Cité. La Cité visée est celle de l'Antiquité grecque. Aujourd'hui appelé Cité-État du fait de la similitude de leur organisation avec celle de nos États modernes (pouvoir centralisé, institutions, diplomatie...) Mais le lien entre politique et État n'est pas si évident, cette acception est relativement récente.

Der Begriff Politics bezeichnet die prozesshafte Dimension von Politik.Der Begriff ist aus der anglo-amerikanischen Politikwissenschaft übernommen, in der sich die unterschiedlichen Aspekte von Politik auch in der Sprache niederschlagen.Im Gegensatz zur institutionellen (Polity) und inhaltlichen (Policy) Dimension wird dort mit Politics die Dimension politischer Verfahren, (beispielsweise Wahlverfahren, Abstimmungen, aber auch Lobbyismus und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit) bezeichnet. Im Deutschen wird dieser nicht näher spezifizierte Bedeutungsraum der Regulierung gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens mit der diffusen Bezeichnung Politik umschrieben.

Der Begriff Politik wird aus dem griechischen Begriff Polis für Stadt oder Gemeinschaft abgeleitet. Er bezeichnet ganz allgemein ein vorausberechnendes, innerhalb der Gesellschaft auf ein bestimmtes Ziel gerichtetes Verhalten. Allerdings gibt es letztlich bis heute keine Einigkeit darüber, ob Macht, Konflikt, Herrschaft, Ordnung oder Friede die Hauptkategorie von Politik ausmachen.

Polityka (z gr. polis - państwo-miasto) jest pojęciem właściwym, a także nie właściwym naukom społecznym, rozumiane jest wielorako. Pierwotnie, w klasycznej teorii polityki Arystotelesa, jako rodzaj sztuki rządzenia państwem, której celem jest dobro wspólne. W starożytności i średniowieczu dominowała podobna idealizacja polityki i polityków i wywodzenie jej źródeł z praw natury bądź woli sił nadprzyrodzonych, służąca uzasadnianiu nierównoprawnych podziałów na uprzywilejowanych rządzących i podporządkowanych ich interesom poddanych.

Politics è un termine di origine anglosassone che indica la "politica" nel senso di meri rapporti di forza, di partiti e politici, contrapposto a Policy. Gli stessi termini in italiano non trovano una traduzione perché sono entrambi inclusi nella medesima parola: "politica".

Secondo un'antica definizione scolastica, la politica è l'Arte di governare le società. Il termine, di derivazione greca (da polis "πολις", città), si applica tanto alla attività di coloro che si trovano a governare (per scelta popolare in democrazia, o per altre ragioni in altri sistemi), quanto al confronto ideale finalizzato all'accesso all'attività di governo o di opposizione.
