Political science is a social science discipline concerned with the study of the state, government, and politics. Aristotle defined it as the study of the state. It deals extensively with the theory and practice of politics, and the analysis of political systems and political behavior. Political scientists "see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions, and from these revelations they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics works." Political science intersects with other fields; including anthropology, public policy, national politics, economics, international relations, comparative politics, psychology, sociology, history, law, and political theory. Although it was codified in the 19th century, when all the social sciences were established, political science has ancient roots; indeed, it originated almost 2,500 years ago with the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Politikwissenschaft (auch Politische Wissenschaft oder seltener Politologie) ist eine Integrationswissenschaft, die sich mit dem wissenschaftlichen Studium der Politik und allen im weiteren Sinne politischen Erscheinungen und Handlungen des menschlichen Lebens beschäftigt.

La science politique est la science qui étudie les phénomènes politiques. Plus précisément, elle consiste à étudier les processus politiques mettant en jeu des rapports de pouvoir entre les individus, les groupes, et surtout au sein de l'État.

Dels studeras politikens grundläggande spelregler i form av författningsfrågor och strukturella förhållanden, dels vilka politiska åtgärder som kan vidtas, och vilka konsekvenser dessa får. En central aspekt inom statsvetenskapen är makt, förmågan hos en grupp eller individ att styra eller påverka andra grupper, individer och samhällets utformning.

Politologia to jedna z nauk społecznych, zajmująca się polityką rozumianą jako całokształt działalności związanej z dążeniem do zdobycia, sprawowania i utrzymania władzy, teorią jej organizacji oraz funkcjami i charakterem państwa. Anglosasi na określenie politologii używają terminu political science, a Francuzi - sciences politiques. Konferencja politologów w Paryżu (1948) pod egidą UNESCO zdecydowała o przyjęciu terminu nauka polityczna. W Polsce długo istniało rozróżnienie na nauki polityczne (zajmujące się polityką), np. nauka o państwie, ekonomia polityczna, historia polityczna, historia myśli społecznej, socjologia stosunków politycznych, polityka społeczna, geografia polityczna itp., oraz na naukę o polityce.
