POLDER (POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances) is a passive optical imaging radiometer and polarimeter developed by the French space agency CNES.

A polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments (barriers) known as dikes that forms an artificial hydrological entity, meaning it has no connection with outside water other than through manually operated devices. There are three types of polder:

• Land reclaimed from a body of water, such as a lake or the sea bed.
• Flood plains separated from the sea or river by a dike.
• Marshes separated from the surrounding water by a dike and subsequently drained.

The ground level in drained marshes subsides over time and thus all polders will eventually be below the surrounding water level some or all of the time. Water enters the low-lying polder through groundswell owing to water pressure on ground water or rainfall and transport of water by rivers and canals. This usually means that the polder has an excess of water, which needs to be pumped out or drained by opening sluices at low tide. However care must be taken not to set the internal water level too low. Polder land made up of peat (former marshland) will show accelerated compression owing to the peat decomposing in dry conditions. Polders are at risk from flooding at all times and care must be taken to protect the surrounding dikes. Dikes are mostly built using locally available materials and each has its own risk factor: sand is prone to collapse owing to oversaturation by water while dry peat is lighter than water, making the barrier potentially unstable in very dry seasons. Some animals dig tunnels in the barrier, undermining the structure; the muskrat is notorious for this behaviour. For this reason in the Netherlands it is actively hunted to extinction. No such care is taken in neighbouring Germany though, causing the stock to be constantly resupplied across the border. Polders are most commonly though not exclusively found in river deltas, former fenlands and coastal areas.

Ein Koog (Mehrzahl: Köge) (auch Polder oder Groden) ist meist ein an der Nordseeküste Deutschlands, Dänemarks, der Niederlande und Belgiens durch Deichbau und Entwässerung aus der See gewonnenes, sehr flaches Marschland. Aber auch an Flussläufen bezeichnet man Bereiche, die entsprechend vor Hochwasser bzw. Überflutung geschützt sind, als Polder oder Koog. Der Deich bewahrt das Land vor Überflutung, da es oft niedriger als der Wasserspiegel des Gewässers liegt, aus dem das Land gewonnen wurde.

Zaanstad ist eine Gemeinde in der Provinz Nordholland (Niederlande). Die Gemeinde Zaanstad wurde 1974 durch die Vereinigung der Gemeinden Zaandam (Deutsch oft auch inkorrekt Saardam), Krommenie, Assendelft, Koog aan de Zaan, Westzaan, Wormerveer und Zaandijk gebildet. Die Gemeinde liegt 6 km nordwestlich von Amsterdam am Fluss Zaan in der Nähe des Nordseekanals. Sie hat eine Fläche von 83 km² mit 141.285 Einwohnern (Stand: 1. Januar 2007).

Un polder est une étendue artificielle de terre dont le niveau est inférieur à celui de la mer. Les polders sont réalisés par drainage provoquant l'assèchement de marais, estuaires, de lacs, ou de zones littorales. Les Pays-Bas sont souvent associés aux polders, puisqu'une grande partie de leur surface a été gagnée sur la mer au cours des siècles (voir Géographie des Pays-Bas). De telles zones existent aussi dans le Nord de la France dans la région des Watergangen ou Wateringen (du néerlandais rondes d'eau ; prononcer [ ʋatəriŋən ]), près de Dunkerque, et dans la région de Kamouraska, Québec.

Polder är ett markområde, som erhållits genom invallning och torrläggning. Begreppet används i första hand för områden vid Nordsjöns kust i Nederländerna och Tyskland.
