诗人是创作优秀诗歌作品的人。属于文学家。詩人和其他文學家不同的地方在於他要對格律非常的熟悉，詩的形式在中西方都有固定的體裁，特別是古詩，其對稱，押韻，字義的推敲都比小說或是散文來的嚴格。因此一首小詩，文学价值就有可能超过短篇散文。在詩人當中也有分出來一些特別的詩人，例如能夠寫下史詩的詩人，通常能獲得國家的尊敬。能夠寫出很多情诗的詩人，則被大眾所熟悉。
