Plazma - silnie zjonizowany gaz, występują w niej neutralne cząsteczki, zjonizowane atomy oraz elektrony, jednak cała objętość zajmowana przez plazmę z "globalnego" punktu widzenia jest elektrycznie obojętna. Uważa się ją za czwarty stan skupienia materii. Plazma przewodzi prąd elektryczny, a jej  Opór elektryczny, inaczej niż w przypadku metali, maleje ze wzrostem jej temperatury.
