In terrestrial animals, plantigrade locomotion means walking with the podials and metatarsals flat on the ground. It is one of three forms of locomotion adopted by mammals. The other options are digitigrade, walking on the toes with the heel and wrist permanently raised, and unguligrade, walking on the nail or nails of the toes (the hoof) with the heel/wrist and the digits permanently raised. The leg of a plantigrade mammal includes the bones of the upper leg (femur/humerus) and lower leg (tibia and fibula/radius and ulna). The leg of a digitigrade mammal also includes the metatarsals/metacarpals, the bones that in a human compose the arch of the foot and the palm of the hand. The leg of an unguligrade mammal also includes the phalanges, the finger and toe bones. Humans are an example of a plantigrade species. Other plantigrade species include (but are not limited to) raccoons, opossums, bears, rabbits,  kangaroos, mice, red pandas, rats, hyraxes, skunks and hedgehogs. The primary advantages of a plantigrade foot are stability and weight-bearing ability; plantigrade feet have the largest surface area. The primary disadvantage of a plantigrade foot is speed. With more bones and joints in the foot, the leg is both shorter and heavier at the far end, which makes it difficult to move rapidly.

Sohlengänger sind Wirbeltiere wie Bären und Primaten (also Affen und Menschen), die einen „plantigraden Fuß“ besitzen. Man spricht auch von einer plantigraden Gangart. Bei der Fortbewegung berührt der ganze Fuß von der Ferse bis zu den Zehen den Boden. Von den Sohlengängern werden die Spitzengänger und die Zehengänger unterschieden.

Chez les mammifères, le déplacement plantigrade renvoie à une façon de marcher en posant toute la plante et le métatarse du pied sur le sol. Les êtres humains sont un exemple d'espèce plantigrade, au même titre que les ratons laveurs, les opossums, les ours, les lapins, les souris, les pandas, les rats, les mustelas, les moufettes, les blaireaux et les hérissons.

Hälgångare är djur som vid gång sätter hela fotsulan i marken. Exempelvis är primater och björnar hälgångare.

Un plantígrado es todo aquel animal que apoya completamente la planta del pie para andar. Suele utilizarse más cuando se habla de mamíferos como los osos o los humanos, para hacer notar la diferencia con los digitígrados, que son mayoría entre los mamíferos actuales. Aclarando esta definición, se sabe que los mamíferos poseen los dígitos o dedos y la planta o palma. Los plantígrados se apoyan enteramente sobre los dedos y la palma, tanto de las patas delanteras como de las traseras (en los humanos, tan sólo de los pies, pero para poner un ejemplo, fíjate que cuando caminas, primero apoyas el talón, después la planta y por último los dedos, pero cada parte del pie toca el suelo). En cambio, los digitígrados apoyan sólo los dedos, es decir, andan como "de puntillas".
