Fundamentally, a plantation is usually a large farm or estate, especially in a tropical or semitropical country, on which cotton, tobacco, coffee, sugar cane, or trees and the like are cultivated, usually by resident laborers.A plantation is an intentional planting of a crop, on a larger scale, usually for uses other than cereal production or pasture. The term is currently most often used for plantings of trees and shrubs. The term tends also to be used for plantings maintained on economic bases other than that of subsistence farming.

Eine Plantage (plan:ta:-ʒə; von lat. plantare (an)pflanzen, englisch Plantation) ist ein forst- oder landwirtschaftlicher Großbetrieb, der sich auf die Erzeugung eines Produktes (Monokultur) für den Weltmarkt spezialisiert hat. Typische Produkte von Plantagen sind mehrjährige Pflanzen oder Dauerkulturen wie Bananen, Baumwolle, Holz, Palmöl, Kaffee, Kakao, Tee, Obst, Sisal, Naturkautschuk, aber auch einjährige Pflanzen wie Zuckerrohr. Zu einer Plantage gehören oft aufwändige Einrichtungen, in denen das Produkt vorverarbeitet wird. Plantagen werden außer in den Tropen auch in mediterranen Gebieten, wie dem europäischen Mittelmeerraum, Kalifornien und Südafrika, bewirtschaftet. Andere Bezeichnungen für „Plantage“ können sein: landwirtschaftlicher Großgrundbesitz oder Latifundium.

Een plantage is een stuk grond waarop op grote schaal gewassen in monocultuur verbouwd worden. Plantages komen meestal voor in de tropen, met gewassen als bijvoorbeeld suikerriet, koffie, thee, bananen, soja, ananas, Aloë vera, teakhout, cacao, coca, hennep, opium en tabak.Plantages zijn op grote schaal aangelegd in de 16de en 17de eeuw door de Portugezen, Spanjaarden, Engelsen, Fransen, Nederlanders en andere Europeanen die in de 16de en 17de eeuw het hele Caribisch gebied en grote delen van het Amerikaanse vasteland koloniseerden. Met slaven als werkkrachten - eerst Indianen, later Afrikanen - verbouwden de Europese eigenaars van de plantages in deze zogenaamde 'plantagekoloniën' tropische landbouwproducten voor de Europese markt. Ook Nederlands-Indië kende plantages op grote schaal. Vanwege de grote hoeveelheid goedkope inlandse arbeidskrachten was het hier echter niet noodzakelijk slaven in te zetten.
