Eine Planstadt oder Retortenstadt ist eine Stadt oder ein Stadtteil, deren Grundriss ein deutlich erkennbarer Plan zugrunde liegt. Dies erfordert, dass die bebaute Fläche zur Planung völlig frei war oder zumindest durch gezielten Abbruch, Zerstörung im Krieg oder in einer Brandkatastrophe freigeräumt wurde.

ニュータウン（英語：New town）とは、新規に開発される地域のことをいう。大規模な都市建設プロジェクトの場合は、計画都市とも呼ばれる。日本では、都市の郊外に新規に開発される新興住宅地のことを示すこともある。ニュータウンは、それまでの大都市の需要が拡大したなどを理由に建設される。ブラジルのブラジリアのように、国家が加わるプロジェクトとして開発されることもある。新興住宅地を意味するニュータウンは、付近の都市や住宅地の需要が拡大したなどを理由に建設される。しかし、新規の新興住宅地を意味してニュータウンと呼ばれるのは日本のみで、新規の新興住宅地を意味するニュータウンは、海外では通じないこともある。ちなみに、韓国でも日本のニュータウンと同様の都市開発が主に政府主導で行われているが、これは「新都市（シンドシ、）」と呼ばれている。
