A planetarium (plural planetariums or planetaria) is a theatre built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky, or for training in celestial navigation. A dominant feature of most planetariums is the large dome-shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars, planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate the complex 'motions of the heavens'. The celestial scenes can be created using a wide variety of technologies, for example precision-engineered 'star balls' that combine optical and electro-mechanical technology, slide projector, video and fulldome projector systems, and lasers. Whatever technologies are used, the objective is normally to link them together to provide an accurate relative motion of the sky. Typical systems can be set to display the sky at any point in time, past or present, and often to show the night sky as it would appear from any point of latitude on Earth.

Ein Planetarium (griech.-lat. Planetenmaschine) bedeutete ursprünglich ein Gerät zur Veranschaulichung des Planetenlaufs. Bis zum 19. Jahrhundert verstand man darunter einen kleinen mechanischen Apparat, den man inzwischen als „Orrery“ bezeichnet. Unter dem modernen Planetarium versteht man heute zum einen ein Gebäude mit einer halbkugelförmigen Kuppel, auf deren Innenfläche Bilder des Sternenhimmels von einem speziellen Projektor erzeugt werden. Diese Art Planetarium bezeichnet man als Projektionsplanetarium. Zu den wesentlichen Merkmalen gehört, dass der Projektor die Tages- und Jahresbewegungen zu einer beliebigen Zeit und für einen beliebigen geographischen Ort darstellen kann. Als Erfinder des modernen Projektionsplanetariums gilt der Physiker Walther Bauersfeld, der es 1919 im Auftrag von Carl Zeiss Jena entwickelte und baute. Das Projektionsplanetarium ist nicht mit einer Sternwarte zu verwechseln. Ersteres erzeugt einen simulierten Sternenhimmel, während man in einer Sternwarte die realen Himmelsobjekte beobachten kann.

Le terme planétarium désigne le dôme présentant une reproduction du ciel avec ses constellations et ses étoiles, et, par métonymie  le projecteur spécifique permettant de simuler le ciel sur un écran hémisphérique, de même que la salle où fonctionne ce projecteur, ou encore la structure organisée tout autour. La tendance qui tend à se généraliser actuellement en France, notamment sous l'influence de l'APLF (voir infra), est de désigner par planétarium un lieu de culture scientifique dédié à l'astronomie et pouvant comporter différents systèmes de projection du ciel étoilé.
