A planet is a celestial body orbiting a star or stellar remnant that is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity, is not massive enough to cause thermonuclear fusion, and has cleared its neighbouring region of planetesimals. The term planet is ancient, with ties to history, science, mythology, and religion. The planets were originally seen by many early cultures as divine, or as emissaries of deities. As scientific knowledge advanced, human perception of the planets changed, incorporating a number of disparate objects. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially adopted a resolution defining planets within the Solar System. This definition has been both praised and criticized, and remains disputed by some scientists since it excludes many objects of planetary mass based on where or what they orbit.

Ein Planet (Wandelstern), im engeren astronomischen Sinn auch „solarer Planet“ genannt, ist ein Himmelskörper, der (a) sich auf einer keplerschen Umlaufbahn um die Sonne bewegt, (b) dessen Masse groß genug ist, dass sich das Objekt im hydrostatischen Gleichgewicht befindet – und somit eine näherungsweise kugelähnliche Gestalt besitzt – und der (c) das dominierende Objekt seiner Umlaufbahn ist, das heißt, diese über die Zeit durch sein Gravitationsfeld von weiteren Objekten „geräumt“ hat.

Selon la dernière définition de l'Union astronomique internationale (UAI), « une planète est un corps céleste :

• qui est en orbite autour du Soleil ;
• qui possède une masse suffisante pour que sa gravité l'emporte sur les forces de cohésion du corps solide et la maintienne en équilibre hydrostatique (sous une forme presque sphérique) ;
• qui a éliminé tout corps se déplaçant sur une orbite proche ».

Le Probing Lensing Anomalies NETwork (PLANET, « Réseau sondant les anomalies lenticulaires ») est une organisation qui coordonne un réseau de télescopes afin de vérifier rapidement des mesures photométriques et spectroscopiques de l'agrandissement du rayonnement de diverses sources par microlentille gravitationnelle, causée par des étoiles ou d'autres corps compacts de la Voie lactée.

Le réalisme fantastique est un mouvement qui a connu son heure de gloire dans les années 1960, relayé par la revue Planète, et dont l'acte fondateur fut le livre de Jacques Bergier et Louis Pauwels intitulé Le Matin des magiciens, sous-titré Introduction au réalisme fantastique, et publié en octobre 1959.

En planet är en relativt stor himlakropp som rör sig i en keplersk bana runt en stjärna. Är massan så stor att fusion börjar ske och avge synligt ljus räknas himlakroppen dock som stjärna och inte planet. Definitionen av vad som ska räknas som planet har varierat under årens lopp. Namnet planet kommer från grekiskans πλανήτης, planētēs, och betyder vandrare eftersom forskare observerade att planeterna förflyttade sig över  stjärnhimlen till skillnad från stjärnorna som alltid behåller sina inbördes positioner i förhållande till varandra. Ett annat namn för planeter är därför vandringsstjärnor.

W odróżnieniu od gwiazd, świecących światłem własnym, planety świecą światłem odbitym.
