Placebo effect is the term applied by medical science to the therapeutical and healing effects of inert medicines and/or ritualistic or faith healing manipulations. . When referring to medicines, placebo is a preparation which is pharmacologically inert but which may have a therapeutical effect based solely on the power of suggestion. It may be administered in any of the ways in which pharmaceutical products are administered. Regarding procedures drawing on the placebo effect, psychic surgery and faith healing are two possible examples.

Ein Placebo (lat. „ich werde gefallen“) im engeren Sinne ist eine Tablette oder ein anderes medizinisches Präparat, welches keinen pharmazeutischen Wirkstoff enthält und somit per Definition auch nicht durch einen solchen Stoff eine pharmazeutische Wirkung verursachen kann. Die Wirkung beruht nicht auf Pharmakodynamik. Im medizinwissenschaftlichen Sprachgebrauch werden heute im erweiterten Sinne auch alle anderen therapeutischen Maßnahmen als Placebo bezeichnet, die ohne naturwissenschaftlichen Nachweis einer spezifischen Wirkung trotzdem eine positive Reaktion, den sogenannten Placeboeffekt, am Patienten bewirken können. Weiterhin kann der Placeboeffekt auch die Wirkung von Therapien, deren spezifische Wirksamkeit erwiesen ist, noch verstärken.

Placebo (łac. spodobam się) - substancja lub działanie (np. zabieg chirurgiczny) obojętne, nie mające wpływu na stan zdrowia pacjenta, podawane choremu jako terapia. Chory nie wie, że to, co zastosowano nie jest prawdziwym leczeniem, zaś wszystko (dla leku głównie: wygląd, zapach, smak, konsystencja), oprócz leczniczych właściwości placebo jest takie samo, jak rzeczywistej terapii.
