The pituitary gland, or hypophysis, is an endocrine gland about the size of a pea that sits in a small, bony cavity (sella turcica) covered by a dural fold (sellar diaphragm) at the base of the brain. The pituitary fossa, in which the pituitary gland sits, is situated in the sphenoid bone in the middle cranial fossa at the base of the brain.

L'hypophyse ou glande pituitaire (hypophysis, glandula pituitaria) est une glande endocrine qui se trouve dans une petite cavité osseuse à la base du cerveau, la selle turcique (sella turcica). Elle est reliée à une autre partie du cerveau appelée l'hypothalamus. Elle produit des hormones qui gèrent une large gamme de fonctions corporelles, dont les hormones trophiques qui stimulent les autres glandes endocrines. Cette fonction inspirait les scientifiques à l'appeler la « glande maîtresse » du corps, mais aujourd'hui on sait que l'hypophyse est régulée par les hormones (neuro-hormones) émises par l'hypothalamus.

Die Hypophyse (griechisch υπόφυσις (hypóphysis), „das unten Anhängende Gewächs“) ist eine Hormondrüse, der eine zentrale übergeordnete Rolle bei der Regulation des endokrinen Systems im Körper zukommt. Die Hypophyse sitzt in der Sella turcica, einer knöchernen Vertiefung der Schädelbasis auf Höhe der Nase und mitten im Schädel. Eine weitere geläufige deutsche Bezeichnung ist Hirnanhangsdrüse, die lateinisch-anatomische Bezeichnung Glandula pituitaria.

Przysadka mózgowa jest gruczołem dokrewnym o masie 0,7 g, którego funkcją jest wytwarzanie i wydzielanie hormonów. Jest ona zlokalizowana wewnątrz czaszki w okolicy kostnego zagłębienia nazywanego siodłem tureckim (łac. sella turcica). Przysadka jest ściśle funkcjonalnie związana z częścią mózgu –  podwzgórzem.Przysadka dzieli się na trzy części: przednią (adenohypophysis), środkową i tylną. Część przednia i środkowa powstały z nabłonka wyścielającego podniebienie wtórne, natomiast część tylna powstała z podwzgórza i funkcjonalnie jest jego częścią: nie wytwarza ona własnych hormonów, a jedynie magazynuje i wydziela oksytocynę i wazopresynę (hormon antydiuretyczny).

De hypofyse, oftewel hersenaanhangsel, is een klier midden in het hoofd, onder de hersenen, die vele hormonen afscheidt. De hypofyse vervult een belangrijke rol bij de regulering van een groot aantal hormonen. De klier is ongeveer zo groot als een doperwt (doorsnede circa één centimeter) en is gelegen in een holte in de schedelbasis (het zogeheten Turkse zadel of Sella Turcica in het Latijn), achter de neusrug. De achterkwab van de hypofyse behoort tot het diencephalon. Bij de aanleg in de embryonale fase wordt de voorkwab van de hypofyse gevormd uit een stukje epitheel van het monddak; het zogenaamde zakje van Rathke.
