In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter who attempts to either make contact with it or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. In the National League and the Japanese Central League, the pitcher also bats. Starting in 1973 with the American League and spreading throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the hitting duties of the pitcher have generally been given over to the position of designated hitter, a cause of some controversy.

Un lanceur est un joueur de baseball qui lance la balle vers la zone de prises près du batteur. Son objectif est de retirer le batteur sans qu'il puisse frapper un coup sûr ni profiter d'une base automatique. Il cherche à empêcher les batteurs de marquer des points.

Der Pitcher ist ein Spieler und/oder eine Position im Baseball- und Softball-Sport. Der Pitcher wird im Deutschen häufig als Werfer bezeichnet. Während seine Mannschaft Feldmannschaft ist, steht er normalerweise in der Mitte des Infield auf dem Pitcher's Mound, einem ca. 30 cm hohen Hügel, und wirft von dort dem jeweiligen  Batter der Schlagmannschaft, bzw. dem dahinter hockenden Catcher seiner eigenen Mannschaft, die Bälle zu. Ein guter Pitcher zeichnet sich durch schwer zu schlagende Würfe aus. Dabei kommen mehrere verschiedene Wurftechniken (z. B. Fastball – der am meisten verwendete Wurf, Changeup, Curveball, Slider, Knuckleball) zum Einsatz, um die Würfe für den Batter schwerer berechenbar zu machen.

Nel gioco del baseball, il Lanciatore (L, pitcher in inglese) è il giocatore che dal "monte di lancio", un rialzo sul terreno di gioco posto a 60 piedi e 6 pollici dalla "casa base", lancia la palla verso il battitore, cercando di impedirgli l'avanzamento sulle basi, direttamente, eliminandolo con uno strikeout, o indirettamente, facendogli colpire una palla che possa essere poi giocata con facilità dalla difesa. Sebbene il nome si riferisca a tutti i lanciatori che si alternano nel corso di una partita, il ruolo del lanciatore si identifica con i giocatori che iniziano la partita per la propria squadra, con l'intenzione di portare a compimento l'intera gara, o perlomeno restare in partita il più a lungo possibile.
