Piracy is a robbery committed at sea, or sometimes on the shore, by an agent without a commission from a sovereign nation. Seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue (with estimated worldwide losses of US $13 to $16 billion per year[1]), particularly in the waters between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, off the Somali coast, and also in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, which are used by over 50,000 commercial ships a year. A recent surge in piracy off the Somali coast spurred a multi-national effort led by the United States to patrol the waters near the Horn of Africa to combat piracy. While boats off the coasts of North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea are still assailed by pirates, the Royal Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard have nearly eradicated piracy in U.S. waters and in the Caribbean Sea.

Pirat - osoba, która napada w celu rabunkowym używając statku lub łodzi. Piraci atakują zwykle inne statki, ale mogą również napadać cele nabrzeżne.W przenośni termin "pirat" stosowany jest również wobec szeregu innych osób, np. kopiujących i sprzedających nielegalnie nośniki z utworami artystycznymi, szczególnie z muzyką, w podobny sposób wzbogacających się na handlu nielegalnym oprogramowaniem komputerowym lub korzystających z takiego oprogramowania, nielegalnie nadających na falach radiowych, drastycznie łamiących niektóre przepisy ruchu drogowego (szczególnie dotyczące ograniczenia prędkości oraz prawa pierwszeństwa), podpinających się pod cudze linie telefoniczne (phreaker) itd. Pirateria è il termine che indica l'attività di quei marinai, denominati pirati che, abbandonando per scelta o per costrizione, la precedente vita sui vascelli mercantili, abbordano, depredano o affondano le altre navi in alto mare, nei porti, sui fiumi e nelle insenature. Diversi sono i termini con i quali si sono indicati i pirati nel corso del tempo. Tra questi:Bucanieri (derivato da Boucan)Filibustieri (derivato dal nome francese Filibustirs, in inglese Freebooter, "saccheggiatori")Ben diversi sono invece i Corsari, fra cui debbono essere compresi i marinai barbareschi (ossia delle regioni "barbaresche" - cioè a maggioranza berbera - che s'affacciano sul Mar Mediterraneo), che operarono tra il XIV e il XIX secolo dalle coste marocchine, algerine, tunisine o libiche. Che i Barbareschi non fossero pirati è dimostrato dal fatto che mai costoro aggredirono naviglio musulmano, riservando le loro azioni di rapina alle sole imbarcazioni cristiane.
