Pigs, also called hogs or swine, are ungulates.Native to Eurasia, they are collectively grouped under the genus Sus within the Suidae family. Despite pigs reputation for gluttony, and another reputation for dirtiness, pigs are actually very intelligent. The nearest living relatives of the swine family are the peccaries.

Das Hausschwein ist die domestizierte Form des Wildschweins und bildet mit ihm eine einzige Art. Es gehört damit zur Familie der Echten Schweine aus der Ordnung der Paarhufer. In einigen Teilen der Welt, etwa im Südwesten der USA, gibt es freilebende Schweinepopulationen, die aus einer Vermischung von Hausschwein und Wildschwein hervorgegangen sind und deshalb auch nicht eindeutig als Hausschwein oder Wildschwein zu klassifizieren sind. Schweine sind Allesfresser; sie fressen sowohl tierische als auch pflanzliche Nahrung.

Il maiale (Sus scrofa, o anche Sus domesticus), o porco, è un suide addomesticato appartenente ai Mammiferi dell'ordine Artiodattili Suiformi. Il maschio si chiama verro e la femmina scrofa, mentre i cuccioli sono detti lattonzoli. È uno degli animali da macello più diffusi e più utilizzati dall'uomo, anche in ragione dell'ampia gamma di sottoprodotti derivati, che vanno da articolatissime specifiche lavorazioni delle sue carni, allo sfruttamento delle setole (secondo un antico adagio, del resto, "del maiale non si butta niente").
