phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are the autotrophic component of plankton. The name comes from the Greek terms, phyton or "plant" and πλαγκτος ("planktos"), meaning "wanderer" or "drifter". Most phytoplankton are too small to be individually seen with the unaided eye. However, when present in high enough numbers, they may appear as a green discoloration of the water due to the presence of chlorophyll within their cells (although the actual color may vary with the species of phytoplankton present due to varying levels of chlorophyll or the presence of accessory pigments such as phycobiliproteins).

Der Begriff Phytoplankton (wörtlich „Pflanzen-Plankton“) bezeichnet photoautotrophes Plankton, vor allem bestehend aus Kieselalgen (Bacillariophyta), Grünalgen, Goldalgen, Dinoflagellaten und Cyanobakterien (Blaualgen). Es baut als Primärproduzent mit Hilfe der Photosynthese aus Kohlenstoffdioxid und Nährstoffen seine Körpersubstanz (Biomasse) auf (Primärproduktion). Das Phytoplankton ist damit die Basis der autochthonen Nahrungspyramide in stehenden und langsam fließenden Gewässern.

Per fitoplancton si intende l'insieme degli organismi autotrofi fotosintetici presenti nel plancton. Il fitoplancton si trova alla base della catena alimentare nella stragrande maggioranza degli ecosistemi acquatici. Esso è composto da varie specie di alghe mono- e pluricellulari che riescono a sintetizzare la materia organica utilizzando le sostanze inorganiche disciolte nell'acqua e la radiazione solare come fonte di energia.
