Organisms that cause infectious disease include fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, viroids, virus-like organisms, phytoplasmas, protozoa, nematodes and parasitic plants. Not included are insects, mites, vertebrate or other pests that affect plant health by consumption of plant tissues. Plant Pathology also involves the study of the identification, etiology, disease cycle, economic impact, epidemiology, pathosystem genetics and management of plant diseases.

Die Phytopathologie ist die Lehre der Pflanzenkrankheiten. Obwohl Pflanzen in der Regel eine hohe Resistenz gegenüber Pathogenen (Pflanzliche Abwehr von Pathogenen) und Herbivoren aufweisen, stellen Erkrankungen von Kulturpflanzen insbesondere in der Landwirtschaft ein großes Problem dar. Sie können zu einem Ertragsausfall führen, aber auch zu einer Qualitätsminderung der Ernteprodukte. Eine Verseuchung der Nahrungsmittel mit Toxinen durch die Stoffwechselaktivität der Krankheitserreger können beim Menschen zu Vergiftungserscheinungen führen.

Fitopatologia (gr.: phyton - roślina, pathos - cierpienie, logos - nauka) – nauka zajmująca się  chorobami roślin, poznawaniem wpływu czynników chorobotwórczych na organizmy roślinne (wywoływanymi przez nie objawami chorób) i biologią tych czynników (ich cyklem życiowym i opracowywaniem metod ich zwalczania). Razem z entomologią stosowaną i herbologią tworzą odrębną dziedzinę wiedzy - ochronę roślin.

Fytopathologie of plantenziektekunde is de studie van de interactie tussen planten en plantpathogenen (zie pathogeen) met als doel het ontwikkelen van strategieën voor hun preventie en bestrijding. Ook het gevolg van de werking van abiotische factoren, zoals luchtverontreiniging, wind en koude, op de plant evenals de invloed van vruchtwisseling worden bestudeerd.
