The definition, agreement and practical use of units of measurement have played a crucial role in human endeavour from early ages up to this day. Disparate systems of measurement used to be very common. Now there is a global standard, the International System (SI) of units, the modern form of the metric system. The SI has been or is in the process of being adopted throughout the world. The United States of America is almost certainly the last to adopt the system but even there it is increasingly being used.

Jednostka miary wielkości fizycznej lub umownej – określona miara danej wielkości służąca za miarę podstawową, czyli wzorzec do ilościowego wyrażania innych miar danej wielkości metodą porównania tych miar, za pomocą liczb. Wartość liczbową takiej miary wzorcowej przyjmuje się umownie (w danym układzie jednostek miar), jako równą jedności, stąd jej nazwa – jednostka miary. Konkretne wartości wielkości można przedstawiać zarówno wielokrotnościami, jak i ułamkami jednostek, a same wartości, o ile to możliwe, mogą być zarówno dodatnie, jak i ujemne.

Le unità di misura sono uno standard per la misurazione di quantità fisiche. In fisica e in metrologia, è necessaria una definizione chiara e univoca di tali quantità, al fine di garantire l'utilità e la riproducibilità dei risultati sperimentali, che è alla base del metodo scientifico. Per esempio, si misuri il peso di una mela con una bilancia, se la bilancia legge 100 e l'unità di misura in base alla quale è stata calibrata la bilancia sono i grammi, sapremo che la nostra mela pesa 100 grammi.
