Physical intimacy is informal proximity and/or touching. It can be enjoyed by itself and/or be an expression of feelings (such as close friendship, love, and/or sexual attraction) which people have for one another. Examples of physical intimacy include being inside someone's personal space, holding hands, hugging, kissing, caressing, and sexual activity.

Intimität ist ein Zustand tiefster Vertrautheit. Intimität herrscht in der Intimsphäre – einem persönlichen Bereich, der durch die Anwesenheit ausschließlich bestimmter oder keiner weiteren Personen definiert ist und Außenstehende nicht betrifft. Die Intimsphäre und damit die Intimität wird durch  Indiskretion verletzt. Eine Verletzung der Intimität kann Personen seelisch labilisieren.

O abraço é quando duas ou mais pessoas – geralmente duas – ficam parcial ou completamente entre os braços da outra. É usado, dependendo da cultura local, como forma de demonstração de  afeto de uma pessoa para outra. Através dele podemos cumprimentar ou expressar sentimentos como carinho, amor, compaixão, saudade, congratulação etc. Um abraço em alguém pode demonstrar também proteção instintiva.
