A physical examination, medical examination, or clinical examination (more popularly known as a check-up or medical) is the process by which a doctor investigates the body of a patient for signs of disease. It generally follows the taking of the medical history — an account of the symptoms as experienced by the patient. Together with the medical history, the physical examination aids in determining the correct diagnosis and devising the treatment plan. This data then becomes part of the medical record.

Körperliche Untersuchung (auch klinische Untersuchung) ist ein in der Medizin häufig verwandter Begriff für die Untersuchung eines Patienten mit den eigenen Sinnen und einfachen Hilfsmitteln. Die orientierende oder grobe Untersuchung des gesamten Körpers beziehungsweise dessen Organsysteme wird auch als Ganzkörperuntersuchung bezeichnet.

L'examen physique, ou examen clinique, fait partie de l'examen médical, qui permet au médecin d'aboutir à un diagnostic.
Cet examen médical comprend classiquement deux étapes : une anamnèse qui permet, par l'interrogatoire, de retracer l'histoire de la maladie, puis un examen physique à la recherche de signes physiques. Parfois, des examens médicaux complémentaires sont nécessaires si les deux étapes précédentes ne suffisent pas à l'établissment du diagnostic.
L'examen physique, avec l'interrogatoire, est la base de tout examen médical, il ne requiert que quelques instruments et peut être réalisé au cabinet ou au lit du patient. C'est un temps indispensable, permettant un contact entre le médecin et son patient. Il est pourtant de plus en plus délaissé dans la médecine moderne, remplacé par des examens complémentaires. Les sens du médecin étant remplacé par la technologie.

Badanie fizykalne (przedmiotowe) - część badania lekarskiego składająca się z oglądania ( łac. obductio), obmacywania (łac. palpatio), opukiwania (łac. percussio) i osłuchiwania (łac. auscultatio). Może dotyczyć struktur anatomicznych ciała lub też ich funkcji. Wynik badania przedmiotowego może być opisem słownym bądź pomiarem tzw. antropomentrycznym wyrażonym w jednostkach układu metrycznego. Od 1966 r. obowiązuje w Polsce Międzynarodowy Układ Jednostek Miar (Systeme International d'Unites - SI). Dla fizjoterapeuty ważna jest nie tylko ocena jednostkowego pomiaru antropometrycznego tj. struktury (np. waga i wzrost osobniczy, obwód i długość kończyny) czy funkcji (np. siła ścisku ręki, zakres ruchu w stawie), ale i również ocena zachowania ruchowego osoby niepełnosprawnej. Zachowania ruchowe można ocenić na podstawie wyników testów czynnościowych dwojakiego rodzaju:

1. Testy kodowe (skale numeryczne) na ich podstawie badający ocenia funkcje badanego - subiektywnie i wg arbitralnie ustalonej punkcji;
2. Testy instrumentalne przeprowadza się, wykorzystując instrumenty pomiarowe, natomiast wyniki pomiarów są oceną obiektywną i ilościową, wyrażoną w jednostkach systemu SI.
