phototaxis

Phototaxis is a kind of taxis that occurs when a whole organism moves in response to the stimulus light. This is advantageous for phototrophic organisms as they can orient themselves most efficiently to receive light for photosynthesis. Phototaxis is called positive, if the movement is in the direction of light, and negative if the direction is opposite.

Als Phototaxis wird eine durch Unterschiede der Beleuchtungsstärke (Beleuchtungsstärkengradient) in ihrer Richtung beeinflusste Fortbewegung von Organismen bezeichnet. Dabei unterscheidet man die positive Phototaxis (Bewegung in Richtung höherer Beleuchtungsstärke) und die negative Phototaxis (Bewegung in Richtung niedrigerer Beleuchtungsstärke).
