Photosynthesis (; from the Greek  [photo-], "light," and [synthesis], "putting together", "composition") is a process used by plants and other organisms to capture the sun's energy to split off water's hydrogen from oxygen. Hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide (absorbed from air or water) to form glucose and release oxygen. All living cells in turn use fuels derived from glucose and oxidize the hydrogen and carbon to release the sun's energy and reform water and carbon dioxide in the process (cellular respiration).

Photosynthese oder Fotosynthese (griechisch  phōs, Licht; σύνθεσις sýnthesis, Zusammensetzung) bezeichnet die Erzeugung von energiereichen Stoffen aus energieärmeren Stoffen mit Hilfe von Lichtenergie. Sie wird von Pflanzen sowie verschiedenen Algen- und Bakteriengruppen betrieben.

La photosynthèse est le processus bioénergétique qui permet aux plantes de synthétiser leur matière organique en exploitant l’énergie solaire. C'est la fabrication de matière carbonée organique à partir d'eau et de carbone minéral en présence de lumière. Les besoins nutritifs de la plante sont le dioxyde de carbone de l'air, l'eau et les minéraux du sol. Les végétaux sont dits autotrophes pour le carbone. Une conséquence importante est la libération de molécules de dioxygène.

Organizmy produkujące związki organiczne na drodze fotosyntezy to:

• wszystkie rośliny (nieliczne wyjątki to rośliny cudzożywne, saprofityczne i pasożytnicze),
• niektóre protisty,
• część bakterii (tzw. bakterie purpurowe oraz sinice).

Dawniej wszystkie organizmy wyposażone w chlorofil zaliczano do jednego królestwa - roślin. Badania ewolucjonistów wykazały, że zdolność do fotosyntezy nie jest dobrym kryterium oceny związków filogenetycznych. Fotosynteza tlenowa (z uwolnieniem tlenu) powstała pierwotnie jedynie u sinic, natomiast aparat fotosyntetyczny pozostałych organizmów (chloroplast) jest wynikiem endosymbiozy. Omówiony poniżej przebieg fotosyntezy dotyczy roślin, u pozostałych organizmów zdolnych do przeprowadzania procesu fotosyntezy istnieją różnice w poszczególnych reakcjach składających się na cały proces.
