Phenylalanine (abbreviated as Phe or F) is an α-amino acid with the formula HO2CCH(NH2)CH2C6H5. This essential amino acid is classified as nonpolar because of the hydrophobic nature of the benzyl side chain. The codons for L-phenylalanine are UUU and UUC. It is a white, powdery solid. L-Phenylalanine (LPA) is an electrically-neutral amino acid, one of the twenty common amino acids used to biochemically form proteins, coded for by DNA.

Phenylalanin ist eine chirale, aromatische Aminosäure mit hydrophober Seitenkette, die in ihrer L-Form in der Natur als Proteinbestandteil vorkommt und für den Menschen eine essentielle proteinogene (am Eiweißaufbau beteiligte) Aminosäure ist. Phenylalanin leitet sich strukturell vom Alanin ab und ist stark hydrophob. Die D-Form ist für den Stoffwechsel nicht verwertbar und auch nur synthetisch herstellbar. In der Biochemie wird für Phenylalanin mit dem Dreibuchstabencode Phe oder dem Einbuchstabencode F abgekürzt.

Fenyloalanina (nazwa skrótowa stosowana w biochemii – Phe, nazwa systematyczna: kwas 2-amino-3-fenylopropionowy), jest jednym z 20 aminokwasów kodowanych, będących podstawowym budulcem większości naturalnie występujących białek. Fenyloalanina posiada dwa enancjomery, z których tylko forma "L" występuje naturalnie, zaś formę "D" można otrzymać tylko w sztuczny sposób i nie jest ona przyswajana przez organizmy żywe.
