Personal property, roughly speaking, is private property that is moveable, as opposed to real property or real estate. In the common law systems personal property may also be called chattels or personalty. In the civil law systems personal property is often called movable property or movables - any property that can be moved from one location to another. This term is in distinction with immovable property (or immoveable property) or immovables (or immoveables), such as land and buildings. Movable property on land, that which was not automatically sold with the land, included for example larger livestock (wildlife and smaller livestock like chickens, by contrast, was often sold as part of the land). In fact the word cattle is the Old Norman variant of Old French chatel (derived from Latin capitalis, “of the head”), which was once synonymous with general movable personal property.

Der alte Begriff der Fahrnis bezeichnet bewegliche Sachen, im Gegensatz zu den unbeweglichen Sachen (Immobilien). Fahrnisrecht bezeichnet das Sachenrecht der beweglichen Sachen im Gegensatz zum Liegenschaftsrecht. Fahrnisvollstreckung bezeichnet die Mobiliarzwangsvollstreckung. In älteren Texten werden die Wörter farnis, farnus, varnde, fliegende oder rührende habe, varende oder roerende goedern verwendet im Gegensatz zu eigen, erbe, legendes gut, onroerende goederen. Zur Fahrnis zählen also alle Sachen, die weder Grundstücke noch Bestandteile von Grundstücken sind. Beweglich bezeichnet daher in erster Linie die natürliche Eigenschaft einer Sache. So sagt schon der Schwabenspiegel in 168 a: „waz varende gut heizet, daz suln wir iu sagen. Golt, silber, edel gesteine, vie, ros und allez, daz man triben und tragen mag.“ Dazu gehörten auch nicht mit dem Boden verbundene Holzgebäude, alles, was nicht niet- und nagelfest war. Für Holzhäuser galt: „Was die Fackel zehrt, ist Fahrnis.“ Im römischen Recht gehörten auch Sklaven zur Fahrnis.
