The peripheral nervous system (PNS, or occasionally PeNS) consists of the nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord. The main function of the PNS is to connect the central nervous system (CNS) to the limbs and organs. Unlike the CNS, the PNS is not protected by the bone of spine and skull, or by the blood–brain barrier, leaving it exposed to toxins and mechanical injuries. The peripheral nervous system is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system; some textbooks also include sensory systems. It is also a part of the nervous system.

Das Periphere Nervensystem (PNS) umfasst den Teil des Nervensystems, der außerhalb des Gehirns und Rückenmarks gelegen ist. Letztere bilden das Zentrale Nervensystem (ZNS). Im Gegensatz zu diesem ist das PNS nicht durch Knochen oder die Blut-Hirn-Schranke geschützt. Das PNS ist weiter unterteilt in das somatische Nervensystem und das autonome Nervensystem.

Le système nerveux périphérique (SNP) est la partie du système nerveux formée de ganglions et de nerfs qui fait circuler l'information entre les organes et le système nerveux central (SNC) et réalise les commandes motrices de ce dernier.

Perifera nervsystemet, PNS (latin:Systema nervosum periphericum), omfattar alla delar av nervsystemet som inte hör till hjärna eller ryggmärg. Det består av nervtrådar ute i kroppen som förmedlar signaler till och från det centrala nervsystemet, CNS, och som tillsammans med detta bildar nervsystemet hos ryggradsdjuren och särskilt däggdjuren.

Obwodowy układ nerwowy składa się z układu somatycznego i autonomicznego. Nerwy przekazują informacje pomiędzy ośrodkowym układem nerwowym i poszczególnymi narządami. Część somatyczna obwodowego układu nerwowego przewodzi impulsy nerwowe pomiędzy receptorami, ośrodkowym układem nerwowym a mięśniami lub gruczołami. Część autonomiczna łączy ośrodkowy układ nerwowy i narządy wewnętrzne, jak np. serce czy żołądek. Obwodowy układ nerwowy obejmuje 12 par nerwów czaszkowych oraz 31 par nerwów rdzeniowych. Uszkodzenia obwodowego układu nerwowego powodują niedowłady lub porażenia mięśni oraz zaburzenia czucia. Składa się on również z nerwów czuciowych - przewodzących impulsy do ośrodkowego układu nerwowego, oraz nerwów ruchowych- za których pośrednictwem impulsy wędrują do mięśni i gruczołów, oraz nerwów mieszanych, tj. ruchowo-czuciowych.
