perennial plant

A perennial plant or perennial (Latin per, "through", annum, "year") is a plant that lives for more than two years. Perennial plants are divided into two large groups, those that are woody and those that are herbaceous. All woody plants are perennials since they form woody tissue that persists from one year to the next. Woody perennials develop a woody base or root system from which the foliage and flower stems grow year after year while the plant is alive. In common usage the term perennial generally describes herbaceous perennials. Since herbaceous plants as a group include all non woody plants, they can be annual, biennial and/or perennial. Perennial plants can be short-lived (only a few years) or they can be long-lived, as some woody plants, such as trees, have been living for over 3,000 years. They can vary in size from only a few millimeters to over 100 meters tall. They include a wide assortment of plant groups from ferns and liverworts to the highly diverse flowering plants like Orchids and Grasses.

Une plante vivace, ou plante pérenne, est une plante vivant plus de deux ans, mais qui vit souvent beaucoup plus longtemps, la limite de deux ans étant fixée pour séparer les vivaces des bisannuelles. L'expression « plante vivace » est plus souvent utilisé par les jardiniers, pour désigner une plante herbacée qui résiste aux rigueurs de la mauvaise saison, qu'il s'agisse du gel de l'hiver ou de la sècheresse des étés caniculaires. En horticulture, cette expression s'oppose à « plante annuelle » ou « plante bisannuelle ». Elle ne s'applique normalement pas aux plantes ligneuses (arbres, arbustes, arbrisseaux) qui sont vivaces par définition.

U bylin wodnych pąki chronione są przed przemarznięciem przez warstwę wody lub mułu na dnie zbiornika.

Een vaste plant is een plant die langer dan twee jaar leeft. Sommige vaste planten bloeien pas na jaren voor het eerst. Planten die na de bloei sterven heten monocarpisch. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn bamboe en de agave. Planten die jaar na jaar bloeien en zaad vormen heten polycarpisch. De term "vaste plant" wordt gebruikt voor niet-houtige planten (kruiden). Voor bomen, struiken en lianen, altijd meerjarig, wordt de term houtige plant gebruikt.
