Percussion is a method of tapping on a surface to determine the underlying structure, and is used in clinical examinations to assess the condition of the thorax or abdomen. It is one of the four methods of clinical examination, together with inspection, palpation and auscultation. It is done with the middle finger of one hand tapping on the middle finger of the other hand using a wrist action, which is placed firmly on the body over tissue, not bone. When percussing boney areas such as the clavicle the stationary finger can be omitted and the bone is tapped directly such as when percussing an apical cavitary lung lesion typical of TB.

Unter der Perkussion versteht man in der Medizin das zu diagnostischen Zwecken durchgeführte Abklopfen der Körperoberfläche. Sie ist Teil der körperlichen Untersuchung. Das Tätigkeitswort heißt perkutieren, das Eigenschaftswort perkutorisch oder auch perkussorisch.

Inom medicinsk terminologi, innebär perkussion att läkaren knackar på kroppen för att upptäcka vätskeansamlingar under huden, lungsjukdomar och för att undersöka reflexer, till exempel knäreflexer.

Opukiwanie – jeden ze sposobów lekarskiego badania fizykalnego (przedmiotowego). Polega na przyłożeniu lewej ręki z rozpostartymi palcami w opukiwanym miejscu i stukaniu zgiętym palcem trzecim ręki prawej w trzeci palec lewej ręki. Oceniany jest odgłos opukowy. Może on być:

• stłumiony (jak np. na udzie),
• jawny (jak w normalnych warunkach nad płucami)
• bębenkowy (jak na brzuchu).
  

Opukiwaniem można ocenić między innymi:

• wielkość serca, wątroby, płuc (wielkość i ruchomość)
• obecność płynu lub powietrza w jamie opłucnej,
• bezpowietrzność miąższu płucnego (guz, zapalenie),
• wypełnienie pęcherza moczowego.
