peplos

A peplos (Greek: πέπλος) is a body-length Greek garment worn by women in the years before 500 BC. The peplos is essentially a tubular cloth, folded inside-out from the top about halfway down, so that what was the top of the tube is now at the waist and the bottom of the tube is about ankle-length. It is then gathered about the waist, and the open top (at the fold) pinned over the shoulders. The top of the tube (now inside-out) drapes over the waist providing the appearance of two pieces of clothing. Except in the statues of the Caryatid applied often in the vase painting since the 5th century B.C. and in the metopes of the Temples in Doric order.

Der Peplos ist bekannt als eine Bekleidung griechischer Frauen in der Antike.Der Peplos wurde auch in verschiedenen anderen Ländern seit der Eisenzeit getragen. Er besteht im Unterschied zu dem leichten Chiton aus einem langen schweren Stoff. Das viereckige Tuch wird zunächst waagerecht so gefaltet, dass oben ein teil als Überfall Apoptygma umgeschlagen wird; dann wird es, mit dem Apoptygma nach außen, um den Körper gelegt. Hierbei entstehen die Varianten des seitlich offenen (ionischen oder lakonischen) und des seitlich zugenähten (dorischen) Peplos. Meist verleiht ein Gürtel dem Peplos zusätzlichen Halt; er kann sowohl über dem Apoptygma als auch unter diesem liegen. Zuweilen wird das Gewand über dem Gürtel hervorgezogen und bildet einen Bausch Kolpos. An den Schultern wird er mit jeweils einer Fibel befestigt. Häufig finden wir den Peplos außer der schwarz- und rotfigurigen Vasenmalerei bei statuarischer Plastik seit der Archaik vor wie bei dem Typ der Kore ebenso wie bei Architekturplastik wie auf Metopen.

Peplos ( peplos, łac. peplum) – strój kobiecy bez rękawów, uszyty z jednego prostokątnego kawałka tkaniny wełnianej spiętego na ramionach  fibulami. Szerokość tkaniny po złożeniu jej wzdłuż równa była odległości między łokciami przy wyciągniętych poziomo rękach. Długość peplos dobierana była zależnie od wzrostu właścicielki i bez przepasania miał on zakrywać jej stopy. Nadmiar długości tkaniny tworzył tzw. odrzutkę czyli drugą warstwę w jego górnej części. Długość odrzutki mogła być różna - od zakrywającej piersi, do osłaniającej biodra i wtedy peplos bywał przepasany na odrzutce. Tkanina okrywała lewy bok kobiety natomiast na prawym boku bywała zeszyta lecz np. dziewczęta w Sparcie nosiły peplos niezszyte.

De peplos (Oud-Grieks: ) is de typische kledij van vrouwen in het antieke Hellas. Het is echter ook bekend in andere streken sinds de ijstijd. De Dorische peplos bestond uit één wollen laag stof, terwijl de lichtere linnen chiton op de heupen door een riem in meerder lagen valt. Deze grote rechthoekige buisvormige stof is vernauwd of verwijd. Aan de schouders werd hij met een fibula bevestigd. We vinden de peplos hoofdzakelijk op de zwart- en roodfigurige vazen bij de statueske plastiek sinds de archaïsche periode, waarin zowel de Korè als de metopen bekleed zijn met een peplos.
