Моливът е инструмент за писане, рисуване и чертане. Направен е обикновено от дърво и има форма на цилиндър с диаметър 7-8 мм, в който е вмъкнат графит. Моливите се подострят с острилка, което позволява на графита да се покаже извън дървената основа. Изписването на символите става с натискане на графита върху хартията. Написаното с молив може да се изтрива с гума.

Blyanten var oprindelig en stift af bly indfattet i cedertræ (deraf navnet). I dag består stiften af en blanding af pulveriseret grafit og ler. Jo højere grafitindhold, jo blødere stift. Stiftens hårdhed er som regel skrevet direkte på blyanten: H står for hård og B står for blød. Jo højere tallet er, jo hårdere eller blødere. Grafitstiften kan have hårdheder lige fra de meget bløde "9B" til de meget hårde "9H" - de bløde stifter afsætter en tæt, mørk streg, mens de hårde laver en meget let, lys streg.
