Peer review (known as refereeing in some academic fields) is a process of subjecting an author's scholarly work, research or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field. It is used primarily by editors to select and to screen submitted manuscripts, and by funding agencies, to decide the awarding of grants. The peer review process aims to make authors meet the standards of their discipline, and of science in general. Publications and awards that have not undergone peer review are likely to be regarded with suspicion by scholars and professionals in many fields. Even refereed journals, however, can contain errors.

Dans les disciplines scientifiques, l'évaluation par les pairs désigne le travail de groupe de chercheurs qui effectuent un travail critique sur les travaux de leurs pairs pour le compte de revues scientifiques, de conférences scientifiques ou encore pour des institutions publiques (ex. le CNRS) ou privées (comme une fondation) chargées d'évaluer des projets scientifiques. Recenzja naukowa (ang. - peer review) - recenzja utworu naukowego (dysertacji, książki, publikacji w czasopiśmie naukowym), której celem jest ocena naukowej zawartości tego utworu. Angielskie peer review ma nieco inne znaczenie niż recenzja naukowa, podreśla że recenzentami są wybrane osoby ze środowiska naukowego, osoby mające wiedzę i ekspertyzę z danego działu nauki. W odróżnieniu od recenzji artystycznej, recenzja naukowa jest zwykle pisana przed ogłoszeniem utworu naukowego w druku i ma często decydujący wpływ o tym czy dany utwór zostanie przyjęty do rozpowszechniania.

Nell'ambito della comunicazione scientifica la selezione degli articoli degni di pubblicazione avviene tramite revisione paritaria (in inglese chiamata peer review), cioè una valutazione fatta da specialisti. Gli editori e le agenzie di finanziamento usano la revisione paritaria per selezionare le proposte ricevute. Questo processo inoltre costringe gli autori ad adeguarsi agli standard della loro disciplina. Pubblicazioni e premi che non abbiano subito una revisione paritaria sono generalmente guardati con sospetto dai ricercatori e dai professionisti di molte discipline. La revisione paritaria è nata assieme ai periodici scientifici e non è priva di difetti e di progetti di perfezionamento.
