The PHP Extension and Application Repository, or PEAR, is a repository of PHP software code. Stig S. Bakken founded the PEAR project in 1999 to promote the re-use of code that performs common functions. The project seeks to provide a structured library of code, maintain a system for distributing code and for managing code packages, and promote a standard coding style. Though community-driven, the PEAR project has a PEAR Group which serves as the governing body and takes care of administrative tasks. Each PEAR code package comprises an independent project under the PEAR umbrella. It has its own development team, versioning-control and documentation.

The pear is any of several tree species of genus Pyrus and also the name of the pomaceous fruit of these trees. Several species of pear are valued by humans for their edible fruit, but the fruit of other species is small, hard, and astringent.

PEAR est aussi une application qui permet de gérer les bibliothèques (installer ou mettre à jour une bibliothèque). On peut comparer ce système avec les gems de ruby ou, plus largement, aux gestionnaires de paquets comme apt.

Bakkena i w krótkim czasie dołączyło do niego wiele osób, które teraz tworzą społeczność zarządzającą projektem. Głównymi założeniami jego projektu było dostarczenie programistom PHP kolekcji otwartoźródłowych rozszerzeń i prostego systemu ich dystrybucji w postaci tzw. paczek. W przeszłości zaliczało się do tego również PECL, które w 2003 roku stało się samodzielnym projektem.

Grusza (Pyrus L. ) – rodzaj, w większości niewielkich drzew z rodziny różowatych (Rosaceae Juss.). Pierwotnie cały rodzaj występował w strefie umiarkowanej Eurazji nie sięgając jednak tak daleko na północ jak jabłoń, gdyż wymagania cieplne grusz są wyższe. Obecnie szacuje się (w zależności od autora), że zawiera od 30 do 60 gatunków. W ciągu liczącej co najmniej 30 wieków uprawy gruszy wyselekcjonowano kilka tysięcy odmian uprawnych.
