"Pay dirt", a phrase most commonly used in the context of "hitting pay dirt", was widely used in times of
mining, especially during the
California Gold Rush. During this time, it was said to mean one had struck gold, or "pay dirt".This phrase has been used, in addition to the above connotation, in places ranging from various applications to business copyrights. These businesses include farming, mining, and published books.
