particle accelerator
machine that increases the speed of charged particles to a high rate using electrical energy fields
Particle accelerator
particle accelerator
Noun
1. a scientific instrument that increases the kinetic energy of charged particles
(synonym) accelerator, atom smasher
(hypernym) scientific instrument
(hyponym) betatron, induction accelerator
(part-meronym) storage ring
Particle accelerator
A machine, usually very large, which accelerates charged particles in electric fields to relativistic speeds. Magnetic fields are employed to constrain the moving particles to required paths. The particles are targetted to collide with other particles and the results of the ensuing nuclear reactions are recorded using devices such as bubble chambers. The results help scientists to understand high energy physics (for instance cosmic rays) and the conditions which were present in the early universe.
