parotitis

Parotitis is an inflammation of one or both parotid glands, the major salivary glands located on either side of the face, in humans. The parotid gland is the salivary gland most commonly affected by inflammation. Parotitis is most often caused by a bacterial infection of Staphylococcus aureus, but can result from viral infection, and other causes. The most common viral cause of parotitis is mumps. Blockage of the main parotid duct, or one of its branches, is often a primary cause of acute parotitis, with further inflammation secondary to bacterial superinfection.

Parotitis is een ontsteking van de bijoorspeekselklier (glandula parotis). Deze kan van virale of bacteriële oorsprong zijn. De bof is een virale kinderziekte waarbij de bijoorspeekselklier geïnfecteerd is door het paramyxovirus. De bacteriële parotitis is meestal het gevolg van een obstructie (bijvoorbeeld een speekselsteen) of van een gebrekkige mondhygiëne.

Parotit, eller påssjuka är en inflammation i spottkörtel, vanligtvis öronspottkörtlarna. Åkomman är en virussjukdom som nog är den minst smittosamma av de fem klassiska barnsjukdomarna. Parotit smittar via närkontakt med droppsmitta; oftast är det barn i tvåårsåldern som drabbas.
