Parole may have different meanings depending on the field and judiciary system. All of the meanings originated from the French  (“voice”, “spoken word”). Following its use in late-resurrected Anglo-French chivalric practice, the term became associated with the release of prisoners based on prisoners giving their word of honor to abide by certain restrictions. Parole should not be confused with probation, as parole is serving the remainder of a sentence outside of prison, where probation is given instead of a prison sentence and as such, tends to place more rigid obligations upon the individual serving the term.

Die Bewährung ist ein bestimmter Zeitraum, in der eine Person das in sie gesetzte Vertrauen rechtfertigen muss. In der Regel wird der Begriff im Bereich des Strafrechts für die Zeitdauer der Aussetzung einer Freiheitsstrafe verwendet. In Österreich und in der Schweiz verwendet man den Ausdruck „bedingte Strafe“.

Warunkowe przedterminowe zwolnienie – w wymiarze sprawiedliwości, nadzorowane zwolnienie więźnia przed ukończeniem kary. Różni się od amnestii tym, że wyrok nadal jest ważny i możliwy jest powrót do więzienia w przypadku nieodpowiedniego zachowania w społeczeństwie.

W USA sądy mogą określić minimalny okres, zanim więzień będzie mógł starać się o przedterminowe zwolnienie. Przykładowo, istnieją m.in. wyroki bez podania dokładnej długości kary:

• 25 lat więzienia, z możliwością warunkowego zwolnienia po 15 latach (ang. 15 to 25 years),
• dożywocie, z możliwością warunkowego zwolnienia po 15 latach (ang. 15 to life).

Drugi z powyższych przypadków znany jest jako dożywocie bez podania dokładnej długości kary (ang. indeterminate life sentence), a jego przeciwieństwem jest dożywocie bez możliwości warunkowego zwolnienia zwane bezwzględnym dożywociem (ang. determinate life sentence).
