pariah dog

The term pariah dog, also called pye dog, pi dog or primitive dog, originally referred to the wild dogs of India, but has come to refer in common parlance to any population of wild or feral dogs who live near human settlements worldwide, scavenging for food and seldom interacting directly with humans. These populations may or may not be related to the extant pariah dogs of India, depending on their location and heritage. The term used to be an epithet to the same extent that the word pariah could be used to denigrate as well as designate the lowest social caste of Indians, but is now used in cynology and by kennel clubs with no negative judgment implied.

Le nom de chien paria s'applique à l'origine aux chiens semi-sauvages de l'Inde. Il s'emploie aussi pour désigner les populations de chiens sans maître qui vivent en ville ou près des humains dans toute l'Asie jusqu'au proche Orient (Turquie), et se nourrissent de restes, de déchets éventuellement de chasse et nourriture donnée par les hommes. Ce sont donc des commensaux dont la situation est analogue aux pigeons des villes. Le terme paria a originellement une connotation péjorative qui peut exister pour ces chiens, quoiqu'elle ne soit plus actuelle, ni généralisée. On emploie rarement la dénomination de chien paria en dehors de l'Asie, on parlera plutôt de chiens errants.

Pariahunde sind sehr ursprüngliche Hunde, die in der Nähe des Menschen leben, ohne gefördert oder gefüttert zu werden und ohne direkte Zuchtwahl. Das Wort Paria ist dem indischen Kastenwesen entlehnt und bedeutet Ausgestoßene, Kastenlose; in diesem Falle: Hunde, die am Rande der menschlichen Gesellschaft leben. Sie weisen für gewöhnlich einen recht stabilen Typ auf, der aber regional Unterschiede aufweist. In einigen Gegenden haben sie sich mit entlaufenen Hunden anderer Rassen vermischt.
